Kids Electric Scooters Are A Blast!

Kids electric scooters are increasing in popularity, as are all electric powered vehicles.

Many of us grew up riding traditional “push” scooters, and have fond memories of them.
Today’s electric scooters for kids are safe, fun, and satisfy a child’s need for independence. Many parents are unaware of what they should know if they are considering buying an electric scooter for one of their children.

I have put together 6 tips that will ensure your success in buying kids electric scooters.

#1  Check Weight Capacity Rather Than Suggested Ages

Typically, maufacturers will makes suggestions about an age range for riders of the electric scooter. While this can be helpful, it is not always accurate. My daughter, for example, has a Razor E200S seated electric scooter. Razor suggests that riders of this scooter should be at least 12 years of age. Yet, my daughter just turned 10, and handles the scooter just fine. It is light enough for her to handle, yet sturdy enough to be stable.

Suggested weight capaciites, on the other hand, are important to heed. A rider that is too heavy for the scooter to handle, can damage the scooter in a hurry!

#2  Pay Attention To The Electric Scooter’s Top Speed

Most kids electric scooters have a top speed of between 10-15 mph. While these speeds are safe for children, many kids feel more comfortable at 10 mph than they do at 15 mph.

We considered getting the Razor E100 electric scooter for our daughter. However, it has a top speed of 10 mph, and she felt like she would get bored at that speed. For other children, 10 mph is PLENTY fast!

#3  Consider A Seated Electric Scooter

Riding an electric scooter with a seat comes in VERY handy on longer rides. The Razor E300S electric scooter, for example, has a very comfortable seat. Also, the seat can be adjusted according to the height of the rider, and is detachable.

Basically, you get the best of both worlds!

    #4  Buy An Appropriate Helmet

Many helmets intended for use with kids electric scooters have an open face. This is cause for concern when going 15 mph, as debris can fly in your face. “Junior” motorcycle helmets are a good alternative, becuse they have a shield for the face.

#5  Be Aware Of Your Local Laws And Ordinances

Some areas impose restrictions on the use of certain kinds of powered vehicles, such as electric scooters, on certain types of roads and protected areas. Make sure you are aware if any restrictions exist in your area.

#6  Buy Your Electric Scooter From A  Reputable Dealer

Check with your local BBB, and make sure your are buying your kids electric scooter from an authorized dealer. Legitimate dealers will stand behind warranties, and offer numerous avenues for electric scooter parts and service.

  • Razor E125

    Razor E125

This Christmas, the Razor E125 made the perfect gift for our 9 year old niece!

She is somewhat difficult to buy gifts for, as she is a shy child with seemingly few friends or interests.

We have a few children in the neighborhood that ride the Razor E125 Electric Scooter, and they always looked like they were having lots of fun!

One day, over breakfast, my wife and I discussed giving Amy,(our niece), an electric scooter for Christmas.

Our biggest concern was that she would never ride it, and it would just end up collecting dust. On the other hand, it might help her meet new friends and get her out of the house.

We discussed the pros and cons of buying her the electric scooter, and finally we agreed that the pros clearly outweighed the cons.

None of the sporting goods stores in our area carried the Razor E125.  However, we did find one that carried both the Razor E300 electric scooter, and the Razor E300S electric scooter.

Both models were extremely impressive, however they are really intended for older kids and teenagers. They have a top speed of 15 m.p.h. while the E125 can reach 10 m.p.h.

So we went online and found a variety of razor scooters on Amazon.com. Ultimately, the Razor E125 electric scooter was the model that fit our niece the best.

They come in 2 colors, black and red, and we opted for red.

We had timed the delivery perfectly, as the scooter arrived 2 days before Christmas. We decided to give it to her right away, as we saw no reason to wait.

We presented it to her as she arrived home from a friend’s house. The Razor  E125 was actually sitting in our living room, with a big red bow tied around it!

When she first noticed it, a puzzled look came across her face, and she asked, “Is that scooter for me?”

We said,” you bet, and that’s an ELECTRIC scooter!”

She then squealed with delight, and asked if she could ride it immediately. Naturally, we said “yes”, and she placed the helmet we had gotten with the bike on her head.

The Razor E125 requires a little “push off” to get the engine started, and she left our driveway to take a “spin.”

We were impressed with how quiet it is, and easy to handle. Apparently it can handle riders up to 120 lbs, so Amy would be able to ride it for a few more years.

She returned about 15 minutes later, and asked us how much longer she could ride. We knew that the Razor E125 electric scooter can hold a charge for about 40 minutes, so

we told her to be back in about 25 minutes.

No doubt about it, she was having a BALL!!

We never dreamed that the  Razor Pocket Mod it would be a solution to a very pressing problem.

My16 year old son was offered his first job as a cashier in a hardware store about 3 miles from our house.

My wife and I both work, and we would have been unable to drive him to work. Unfortunately, non of his fellow employees lived nearby, so he would get no help from them.

To make matters worse, he was unable to ride his bike because he was recovering from knee surgery. He had torn ligaments playing football.

    Clearly, we had a problem.

One day, my husband and I were walking our dog, and our neighbor’s daughter rode by us on her Razor Pocket Mod scooter. I have included a video so you could watch the Razor Pocket Mod in “Action”!

As she sped by, my wife and I looked at each other. We spoke simultaneously, and said, “THAT would be perfect for Richie(our son)!

We discovered that the Razor Pocket Mod scooter could hold a charge for 30 minutes, and had a range of approximately 10 miles. That would be PERFECT for the distance Richie had to travel to get to work!

He would be riding on backstreets, so the top speed of 15 m.ph. would be plenty fast enough to get him to work on time.

At 5′6″ tall and 145 lbs, Richie’s size would not over burden the scooter, which can handle riders up to 170 lbs. Needless to say, it was important that the Pocket Mod Scooter came in colors other than pink and purple!

It only weighs about 90lbs, and would be relatively easy to store. Also, if he needed to carry items with him, it has a carrying compartment as well.

We ran the idea by Richie, and he excitedly agreed that it would be a great solution to his problem!

Richie discussed the idea with his boss at work, and his boss agreed. In fact, his boss even would allow him to store the scooter in a shed behind the store.

Our problem was solved by the Razor Pocket mod scooter!

  • We actually bought the Razor E300 electric scooter for our nephew, who was living with us temporarily while my sister was overseas. My other kids all have razor scooters, so we thought it only fair that he should have one as well.

My nephew is a big 14year old, probably tipping the scales at around 180 lbs. His size ruled out the possibility of getting him the Razor E100 electric scooter, which has a weight capacity of up to 120 lbs.

The Razor E200 electric scooter was also a possibility, but we felt like the Razor E300 had a better ride because of larger tires. Both scooters are actually large enough to carry adults, with weight limits of 220 lbs.

Our nephew loves to ride his bike, so we were not sure how he would take to an electric scooter. However, he had shown some interest in the scooters that our kids rode

He actually took a ride on our daughter’s scooter, and he seemed to enjoy it. His enthusiasm was dampened, however, when the scooter ran out of “juice” about 4 miles from our home!

We had warned him that a charge lasts approximately 45 minutes, however he had frequent stops and starts. He lost track of how much actual driving time he had done.

Luckily, he had his cell phone with him. That little bit of luck saved him a L-O-O-N-G walk back to the house!

When he arrived back at the house, our kids teased him relentlessly about his mistake. He never lived it down!

We decided to give him the Razor E300 electric scooter on his birthday. We made up an excuse to get him out to the garage.

When he saw the Razor E300 scooter, back in the corner, he asked, “where did THAT come from?”

My wife and I looked at each other, than looked at our nephew, and replied,”US!”
He suddenly understood, and he flashed a big smile, and said, “WOW, that’s TIGHT!”

He grabbed the helmet, which we had placed next to the scooter, jumped on the Razor E300, and we haven’t seen much of him since!

  • My whole family has enjoyed  riding the Razor E300S electric scooter. The other day, Laura,(my wife), and I were trying to determine all the benefits kids get from riding electric scooters. We thought it would make for an informative blog post.

    Razor E300S Electric Scooter

    Razor E300S Electric Scooter

Reason#1 Riding a Razor E300S electric scooter gets them out of the house. It seems like kids today spend all their time in the house, glued to their computers. Not very healthy or sociable. Riding a scooter is a great way to diversify their activities. The key is to get them to try it the first time.

Reason#2 Gives kids an opportunity to be more sociable. This ties in nicely with reason#1. Sitting in front of a computer certainly doesn’t nurture any interpersonal skills. Riding a scooter is a great way to meet neighbors and become a part of the neighborhood community.

Reason #3 It’s a fun, constructive activity. What ever happened to good old fashioned fun? Riding a scooter with the wind blowing through your hair is a blast! Zipping around the neighborhood gives your child a great sense of freedom and independence.

Reason #4 Riding a Razor E300S gives kids a respect for motor vehicles at a young age. The Razor E300S is not exactly a Corvette, but rest assured it IS a motorized vehicle. Kids have to learn basic rules of the “road”, and adhere to safe driving practices. These are skills that will serve them well later in life.

Reason #5 It’s fast, but safe. Kids won’t get bored. Listen, 15 m.ph. on an electric scooter FEELS fast! Yet, for young teenagers it is perfectly safe. Kids at that age need adequate speed to stay stimulated.

Reason #6 The Razor E300S electric scooter is easy to take care of. Basically, all you need to do is keep it adequately charged, and you are good to go.

Reason #7 With a weight capacity of 220lbs, and a large deck, kids are unlikely to “grow” out of the Razor E300S. Heck, I weigh 190 lbs and I can scoot around with the best of them! Several of our adult friends LOVE to ride Razor scooters, just as much as their kids.

There you have it! Seven great reasons why your kids should be riidng a Razor E300S electric scooter!

  • Razor E200S Seated Electric Scooter

    Razor E200S Seated Electric Scooter

We bought the Razor E200S Seated electric scooter for one of our twin 13 year old daughters as an early Christmas gift.

The younger twin,(by a whopping 8 minutes), Emma is a bit of a “tomboy”, and wanted to continue riding her Schwinn bike.

My wife and I had little experience with electric scooters, so we had to find out as much as we could, so we could make an informed purchase.

Emily,(our oldest), had seen an electric scooter on a YouTube video, that she really liked. We asked her what brand it was, and she told us it was a Razor E200S seated electric scooter.

We went online and found the scooter on Amazon.com. We like Amazon because they provide lots of useful information about the products they offer.

Amazon usually provides reviews by their customers who have experience with the product. We had bought our 9 year old son an electric scooter from Amazon.  That was about all the experience we had.

We liked several features of the Razor E200S…

    * It could reach a speed of 15 m.ph. Definitely fast enough to keep Emily interested and on her “toes”! Because electric scooters are relatively low to the ground, the sensation of speed is much greater.

    * Riders have the option of using a seat, or standing. The seat and post are detachable. Why not pick a scooter with both options?

    * The seat is “cushy” and comfortable. Extremely important if you are going to ride the Razor E200S seated electric scooter for any length of time.

    * It can handle riders who weigh up to 220 lbs, and the handlebars are adjustable. Very important features that will prevent Emily outgrowing the scooter. Also, I can actually ride the Razor E200S myself! My wife has not expressed any interest in riding it herself.

    * The twist grip throttle provides very smooth and easy to control  acceleration. Plus, Emily thinks twisting the throttle is “cool!”

Finally, the scooter has 8 inch pneumatic tires, which really enable it to give a remarkably smooth ride.

Well, Emily loves her seated electric scooter so much that we can hardly keep her off it!

That was actually 2 years ago. Now, in 2010, our whole family are riding scooters!

  • The Razor E200 Electric Scooter is a great value for the money. The reason we feel this way is not only because Razor claims it is made from high tech, high quality materials, but because so many people who have purchased the E200 and claim it is the best gift they have ever given a child.

Children keep using the scooter every day to the point that there are now websites solely designed for after-market products for the Razor scooter. These websites include spare batteries and chargers that either wear out or are somehow damaged through neglect.

The fun part about the E200 scooter is that it turned out to be a wonderful product – quiet, charges overnight, runs for 45 minutes, doesn’t go too fast. Change one of those features and you have a totally different scooter that might be too much for kids to handle

There is one thing to consider when you’re shopping for electric scooters and that is to know who is going to be riding the scooter most of the time.

In most cases, these are gifts, so whomever the happy recipient is, that’s the person you need to think about most. Razor electric scooters are designed for weight sizes.

For example, the E100 series is designed for kids 8 and up and up to 120 pounds. The Razor E200 Electric Scooter is designed for kids 13 and up and up to 220 pounds. The price difference is around $50 so it pays to stay in the weight range for your child.

try not to buy a scooter that is designed for a person weighing less than your child. Eventually, the bearings may wear out and the transmission may fail because of the load. In addition, there is the possibility of the deck failing with the additional weight.

There are many cases where the decks break because adults try riding a scooter that was designed for someone much lighter.

The deck on the Razor E200 Electric Scooter is wide and allows the rider to place both feet firmly on it for stability and easy riding. It also has a surface that is non-slippery and grips surfaces.

Totally different from the A2 style scooters, the E200 has actual pneumatic tires. The tires were designed to give the E200 the smooth ride it is known for and keeps kids safe by keeping their center of gravity low.

With the twist grip accelerator right next to the brake lever, there is little going on to distract even the first time rider.

You will notice that the Razor E200 scooter only goes up to around 12 miles per hour, which keeps kids safe and still gives them a fast ride, plus a really cool feeling of speed as they are close to the ground. All in all the Razor E200 Electric scooter turns out to be the perfect gift.

  • The Razor E100 Electric Scooter helped make Christmas morning at our house a happy place! My wife and I had shopped for an electric scooter for almost 3 weeks, before deciding upon the Razor E100.

When I was a child, I had a red scooter that I absolutely adored! While other kids were whizzing around on their bikes, I was happy as a clam riding my red scooter.

However, times have changed, and I had lost touch with advances in scooter technology. In fact, before discovering the Razor E100, I had never seen an electric scooter!

Our motive for buying the scooter, was to finally loosen up the “death lock” my 9 year old son had on his gaming computer. He was SO addicted to the games that he would frequently play for hours on end!

    NOTHING would pull him away!

Luckily, one day our son announced with excitement, “Guess what, Kevin Mcfarland just got a brand new electric scooter!”

Kevin Mcfarland is one of his gaming “buddies”, who actually lives in our neighborhood. Apparently, he and Kevin had been taking turns riding the scooter ALL afternoon.

My wife and I instantly looked at each other, and we both were thinking the same thing. THIS could be the ticket to getting our son “back.”

So, we called up Kevin’s parents and asked them the brand name of the electric scooter. They informed us that it is a “Razor E100 Electric Scooter.”

We inquired as to where they purchased it, and they informed us that they had bought it online from Amazon.Com. So, we went online to the site, and started reading reviews written by owners of the Razor E100 scooter.

Most of the reviewers felt like the scooter was well made, safe,  and easy to operate. Almost all of them reported that their kids ADORED riding it!

Needless to say, helmets are necessary, as the scooter will actually go up to 10 m.p.h.

Also, you need to be aware of where it is legal to ride an electric scooter. We made sure that our son only rode it on the sidewalks, or the trails behind our house.

He generally rides it for about an hour, with stops in between. The battery will hold a charge for about 45 minutes.

Well, our son has had the Razor E100 electric scooter for awhile now, and he too, adores it! And the best news is that we finally have our son back!
